Ingrown Toenail Treatment
Ingrown toenails develop when the edge of a nail grows into the surrounding skin, often causing pain, redness, swelling, and, in some cases, infection. This is a common condition that can affect people of all ages and is frequently linked to nail cutting techniques, tight footwear, or previous injury.
Prompt treatment can relieve discomfort and help prevent ongoing problems.
Treatment Options
Assessment & Treatment Planning
At your initial appointment, we will carefully assess your ingrown toenail and discuss the most appropriate treatment options for you. We take time to explain each approach clearly, including expected outcomes and any potential risks, so you can feel confident in your treatment plan.
Conservative Ingrown Toenail Treatment
In many cases, ingrown toenails can be managed conservatively during an initial or routine appointment. Treatment may include:
- Careful removal of the offending nail edge, relieving pressure and discomfort around the nail. Local anaesthetic can be used where needed to ensure treatment is as comfortable as possible, if you are booked with one of our HCPC registered Podiatrists, Lucy, Zoe, Yasmin or Sarah.
- Nail packing, where a small piece of gauze or cotton wool is gently placed beneath the nail edge. This encourages the nail to grow away from the skin, helping to reduce pain and inflammation as the area heals.
These approaches are often effective for mild to moderate ingrown toenails and can provide significant relief.
Nail Surgery
When ingrown toenails are recurrent, severe, or do not respond to conservative treatment, nail surgery may be recommended.
This procedure involves removing part or, in some cases, the entire nail, followed by the application of phenol to prevent the problematic section of nail from regrowing. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic to ensure your comfort throughout. Nail surgery has a high success rate and offers a long-term solution for ongoing ingrown toenail problems.
