Verruca Treatments
A verruca, also known as a plantar wart, is a common viral infection of the skin caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Verrucae typically develop on the soles of the feet and often appear as small, rough areas of thickened skin. They may contain tiny dark dots, which are small haemorrhages within the skin caused by pressure, and can become painful when standing or walking.
While some verrucae resolve without intervention, many persist or spread and benefit from professional treatment, particularly if discomfort is affecting daily activities.
Treatment Options
Assessment & Treatment Planning
At your initial appointment, we will carefully assess the verruca and discuss the most appropriate treatment options for you. Clinical photographs may be taken to help monitor progress over time. We take time to explain each treatment clearly, including expected outcomes, benefits, and any potential discomfort, allowing you to make an informed and confident decision.
SWIFT® Microwave Therapy
SWIFT® microwave therapy is an advanced treatment that uses targeted microwave energy to stimulate an immune response and destroy infected tissue. It is considered a non-invasive treatment with minimal aftercare, meaning most patients can return quickly to normal activities such as swimming and exercise, often without the need for dressings.
While SWIFT® is not completely pain-free, it remains a popular choice due to its strong clinical results and convenience. Treatment is approximately 84% effective, costs £130 per session, and typically requires three sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart, followed by a review appointment around 12 weeks after the final treatment. In some cases, additional sessions may be required.
Verrutop®
Verrutop® is a topical nitrizinc complex solution that works by denaturing viral proteins, causing the verruca tissue to dry, harden, and gradually shed away. Any discomfort is usually short-lived, making it a suitable option for patients who are able to commit to consistent aftercare.
Treatment involves application in clinic, followed by twice-daily use of surgical spirit at home, as advised. Verrutop® costs £60 per treatment, with most patients requiring around six treatments, typically carried out every two weeks.
Silver Nitrate
Silver nitrate is a caustic treatment that chemically cauterises verruca tissue. It can be used both in clinic and at home and is generally associated with minimal discomfort. While it is a more conservative option with a lower success rate, it may be appropriate in certain cases.
Silver nitrate treatment costs £42 per session, following an initial £55 assessment and treatment appointment. Overall effectiveness is lower than other treatments, at approximately 30%.
